Hemlock Haunted House Sound Installation

A four-channel sound installation piece was created for the 2019 Haunted House at 11 Hemlock Street in Portland, Maine. It as produced in association with Hidden Ladder Collective.

Channel Placement

The four channels were placed at the positions above. Each channel was themed to the room in which it was placed. Certain elements were added that crossed all channels at different times, such as a heartbeat or a conversation.

The rooms were themed as such:
  1. The Parlour is where we welcome our guests and prepare them for their journey though dulling of their sense of time and space.
  2. The Womb Room is everpresently waiting for our guests to be reborn.
  3. The Operating Theatre is where our guests experience the chaos and pain of life.
  4. The Way of Sinners & Saints prepares our guests to be contemplate their lives and ultimately be judged.

Performance

The 32 minute looping piece was performed multiple times during the evening of November 2nd, 2019 at 11 Hemlock Street. It was performed with the channels both in and out of sync. Actors throughout the haunted house added their own ambience to the piece. Additionally, a performer was present in the Waiting Room playing an improvised piece. A separate narrative piece played in the Relationship room.

Recording

The piece in full is available here on Bandcamp and may be reproduced with up to four playback devices. The download includes a short booklet of photos from the performance.
